Outbound mail involves preparing items for dispatch, applying correct postage, and arranging carrier pickups or internal delivery. Large or sensitive items may be scanned for tracking, labeled, or placed in hold areas until recipients collect them.

A postalroom usually contains a work counter, shelving or lockers for mail storage, a postal scale, and equipment for labeling, sealing, and weighing packages. In larger facilities, it may integrate with mail delivery routes, internal couriers, or parcel lockers, and often interfaces with campus or building security to control access to mail and packages.
