Postalroom

Postalroom, often written as postal room or mailroom, refers to a dedicated space within a building or campus used for receiving, sorting, storing, and distributing mail and parcels. In many organizations, the postalroom serves as the central hub for both inbound and outbound postal activity, coordinating with facilities, security, and administrative staff.

Typical operations include intake of mail from postal services or couriers, sorting by recipient or department, stamping or metering of postage, and logging receipts in a tracking system. Outbound mail involves preparing items for dispatch, applying correct postage, and arranging carrier pickups or internal delivery. Large or sensitive items may be scanned for tracking, labeled, or placed in hold areas until recipients collect them.

A postalroom usually contains a work counter, shelving or lockers for mail storage, a postal scale, and equipment for labeling, sealing, and weighing packages. In larger facilities, it may integrate with mail delivery routes, internal couriers, or parcel lockers, and often interfaces with campus or building security to control access to mail and packages.

Security and policy considerations are central to postalrooms. Access is typically restricted to authorized personnel, with log records or software tracking transactions and handoffs. Privacy and compliance considerations govern the handling of confidential documents, while retention, disposal, and hazardous-material policies may apply to certain items.

In many organizations, the postalroom is part of facilities or administrative services and may be called simply the mailroom. The term postalroom may appear in internal manuals, floor plans, or campus planning documents.
