A posisjonator is a device or subsystem that provides controlled motion to position a load, tool, or sensor relative to a fixed reference frame. It can deliver linear, rotary, or multi-axis movement and is used in automated systems to achieve precise location and repeatable positioning across a range of applications.

Typical construction combines actuators, transmission, guides, and sensing. Actuators may be stepper motors, servo motors, linear motors, or pneumatic/hydraulic cylinders. Transmission elements include ball screws, lead screws, or belt drives. Guiding systems use linear rails or guides to ensure smooth travel, while feedback comes from encoders, resolvers, or linear scales. A motion controller or PLC with a closed-loop control algorithm (often PID-based) regulates position, speed, and acceleration, with safety interlocks and limit switches as standard features.

Variants and configurations vary by use case. Linear posisjonators move along a straight axis; rotary posisjonators provide angular motion; multi-axis platforms combine several axes for complex trajectories. Some versions are vacuum- or cleanroom-compatible, cryogenic or radiation-hard for specialized environments.

Applications span manufacturing and research, including computer numerical control (CNC) machines, robotic arms, optical and laser alignment, semiconductor equipment, medical devices, and laboratory automation. Performance is described by metrics such as repeatability and accuracy (positional tolerance), resolution, straightness or angular accuracy, backlash, stiffness, speed, payload, and thermal stability.
