Polícia refers to the civil force charged with maintaining public order, enforcing laws, preventing and investigating crime, and protecting people and property. Across countries, police agencies are typically part of the public security system and operate under written laws and constitutional protections.

The organization of policing varies widely. Some nations have national or federal police, others have regional or state police, and many also maintain municipal or local police. In some places there are specialized forces or units, such as for traffic, border control, narcotics, cybercrime, or counter-terrorism. Certain countries also maintain a gendarmerie or military police that operates alongside civilian police, often with rural or national security responsibilities.

Core functions commonly include crime prevention, rapid response to incidents, investigation of offenses, traffic enforcement, crowd control, protection of critical infrastructure, and support to the judiciary and corrections system. Police work is typically guided by legal frameworks, internal guidelines, and accountability mechanisms designed to safeguard civil rights and prevent abuses.

Oversight and accountability are central to policing debates. Civilian review bodies, independent auditors, judicial oversight, and internal affairs divisions exist in many systems to address complaints and allegations of misconduct. Training, use-of-force policies, transparency, community engagement, and constitutional rights protection are frequent topics of reform discussions.

Historically, modern policing emerged in urban centers during the 18th and 19th centuries in pursuit of professional, nonpartisan public safety. Today, the term polícia is used in several languages, including Portuguese and Spanish, to denote the law enforcement bodies at various government levels.
