Polyurethane laminate, also known in some languages as polyuretanlaminat, refers to a composite material in which a polyurethane film or coating is bonded to fabric or another substrate to form a laminated structure. The polyurethane component may be a thermoplastic film (thermoplastic polyurethane, TPU) or a cured polyurethane coating, producing different performance profiles.

The TPU film is typically extruded or calendered and then laminated to textiles by heat or adhesive, creating a waterproof and often breathable barrier. PU coatings are applied as a liquid and cured to form a continuous film on the surface. The choice between a TPU film and a PU coating depends on required properties such as flexibility, weight, and breathability.

Key properties of polyurethane laminates include barrier performance against liquids, abrasion resistance, and good flexibility. Breathability depends on the laminate design; some configurations are waterproof and breathable, while others are non-breathable. Film thickness, resin type, and the adhesion method influence stiffness, drape, and hand feel.

Common applications span outdoor clothing and rainwear, tents and tarpaulins, medical textiles, diaper covers, upholstery, and automotive interiors. PU laminates are also used in protective packaging and specialty textiles where a durable moisture barrier is needed.

Manufacturing and processing involve lamination methods such as extrusion lamination for TPU films or adhesive lamination using water-based or solvent-based adhesives. Environmental considerations include VOC emissions, recyclability challenges due to the multi-layer structure, and end-of-life separation and recycling options.

Standards and testing for polyurethane laminates cover water vapor transmission rate, hydrostatic head, abrasion resistance, and aging. These tests help assess durability, comfort, and performance under real-world conditions.
