Polymer clay is a soft modeling material composed mainly of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin with added plasticizers and pigments. It remains pliable at room temperature and can be conditioned, rolled, cut, sculpted, or layered to create beads, figurines, jewelry findings, and sculptural elements. Unlike air-dry or water-based clays, polymer clay cures by baking in a standard oven, after which the piece becomes a hard, durable plastic object.

Most brands cure at relatively low oven temperatures, commonly around 110–130°C (230–265°F), for times specified by the manufacturer depending on thickness. After cooling, cured pieces are typically hard and can be sanded, drilled, painted with acrylics, or sealed with varnish or resin. Some formulations stay slightly flexible when very thin and may crack if underbaked or overbaked.

Common products include Sculpey (Classic, Premo!), Fimo (Soft, Professional), and Kato Polyclay. The material is widely used in jewelry making, miniature sculpture, cosplay props, and craft projects. It is often blended with other colors or materials by conditioning and mixing before baking.

Safety and handling: polymer clay is marketed as non-toxic, but it should not be used for food-contact items unless labeled food safe. Bake only in a dedicated oven or a toaster oven; avoid overheating to minimize odors and plasticizer release. Wash hands after handling and follow manufacturer directions.

Finishing: after curing, pieces can be sanded, buffed, painted, or coated with clear sealants or resin for additional gloss and protection. It can be combined with wire armatures, findings, and other media in mixed-media projects.
