Sculpey

Sculpey is a brand of polymer clay manufactured by Polyform Products. It is a pliable, oven-bake modeling compound that remains soft until it is cured in a home oven. Unlike traditional clay, Sculpey does not harden on its own and requires heat to become permanent. It is popular among artists, crafters, and hobbyists for its versatility in creating jewelry, sculptures, figurines, and other decorative items.

The Sculpey line includes several varieties, such as Sculpey III, Premo!, Soufflé, and Bake Shop, each with slightly different properties. Sculpey III is known for its ease of use and wide range of colors, making it suitable for beginners. Premo! offers enhanced durability and a smoother texture, favored by more experienced artists. Soufflé is lightweight and flexible after baking, ideal for jewelry and mixed media. Bake Shop is designed for younger crafters, being easy to condition and bake.

Sculpey is non-toxic and conforms to ASTM D-4236 standards. After baking according to package instructions, cured Sculpey can be sanded, drilled, painted, and varnished. It is important to use an oven thermometer to ensure accurate baking temperatures, as overheating can cause the clay to become brittle or discolored. Sculpey can be stored at room temperature for extended periods, and its pliability can be restored with a clay softener if it becomes too hard.
