Poloskák is the Hungarian term for true bugs belonging to the suborder Heteroptera within the order Hemiptera. In everyday language it refers to a broad group of insects with diverse lifestyles, from plant-feeders to predators, and including the familiar bed bugs known as ágyi poloska. Because “poloska” is a common name rather than a precise taxonomic category, the exact species grouped under it can vary by context.

Morphology and biology

Poloskák share piercing-sucking mouthparts adapted for feeding on fluids. Body shapes and sizes vary widely among families, ranging from shield-like to elongated forms. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with life stages including eggs, nymphs and adults. Nymphs resemble smaller versions of adults and go through several molts before reaching maturity.

Habitat and ecology

Poloskák inhabit nearly every environment, from forests and fields to homes and gardens. Many are agricultural pests, feeding on crops and ornamental plants, while others are plant feeders that influence vegetation. Some subgroups, such as bed bugs (Cimicidae), are known for living in human dwellings and feeding on blood.

Commonly encountered pest groups include Cimicidae (bed bugs), Pentatomidae (shield bugs), Miridae (plant bugs), and Reduviidae (assassin bugs). The term poloska is often used generically in Hungarian to refer to several of these families rather than to a single taxonomic unit.

Impact and control

Bed bugs can cause bites, itching, and distress, leading to health and economic concerns but are not generally considered vectors of serious diseases. Plant-feeding poloskák may damage crops and ornamental plants. Management typically involves sanitation, exclusion of hiding spots, and, where appropriate, targeted insecticides or professional pest-control measures.
