Poliposis refers to the presence of polyps, which are abnormal growths of tissue. These growths typically protrude from a mucous membrane. Polyps can occur in various parts of the body, including the colon, stomach, nose, uterus, and bladder. The exact cause of polyp formation is not always clear, but factors such as inflammation, genetic predispositions, and certain environmental exposures can play a role.

The symptoms associated with polyposis depend on the location and size of the polyps. For example, colonic polyps may cause rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or abdominal pain. Nasal polyps can lead to congestion, a reduced sense of smell, or recurrent sinus infections. Uterine polyps might result in irregular menstrual bleeding or spotting. Many polyps, especially small ones, are asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during medical examinations or procedures.

Diagnosis of polyposis usually involves visual inspection using endoscopic techniques, such as colonoscopy for colonic polyps or rhinoscopy for nasal polyps. Imaging studies like CT scans or MRIs can also be used to identify and assess the extent of polyp growth. A biopsy is often performed to examine the tissue and determine if the polyps are benign or potentially precancerous.

Treatment for polyposis aims to remove the polyps and prevent complications. Surgical removal, often achieved through endoscopic procedures, is the primary treatment. The specific approach depends on the location, size, and number of polyps. Regular follow-up examinations are crucial, particularly for individuals with a history of polyposis, to monitor for new polyp formation and detect any recurrence. Some types of polyposis are associated with an increased risk of cancer, making early detection and removal of polyps essential for preventative care.
