Ploktmis is a hypothetical linguistic concept referring to the theoretical existence of words or phrases that are inherently unpronounceable by humans, even with specialized training. This concept explores the boundaries of human vocal capabilities and the physical limitations of the speech apparatus. It is not a recognized field of study within linguistics or phonetics but rather a speculative idea that arises in discussions about language universals and the physical constraints on communication.

The idea of ploktmis suggests that there might be sequences of sounds that, due to the precise and rapid movements required for articulation, are physically impossible for a human mouth to produce. These might involve extremely rapid alternations between contrasting sounds, the simultaneous production of multiple consonant clusters that are phonetically incompatible, or sounds that require anatomical configurations beyond human capacity.

While no actual ploktmis words are known to exist, the concept serves as a thought experiment. It prompts consideration of why human languages tend to favor sounds that are producible and distinguishable by the average speaker. The study of phonetics and phonology provides insights into the actual set of sounds humans can produce and perceive, often referred to as the "phonetic inventory" of a language, which is a finite and manageable set. Ploktmis, in contrast, represents the theoretical void beyond this inventory.
