Plastadhesion refers to the adhesion properties of plastics, including the bonding of plastic materials to other materials or to themselves. It encompasses the mechanisms that enable a polymer surface to bond, the factors that influence bond strength, and the methods used to enhance or measure adhesion in polymer systems.

Adhesion arises from wetting of the substrate by the adhesive and interfacial interactions such as van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and polar interactions. In some cases, chemical bonding or covalent coupling contributes to adhesion. For thermoplastics, diffusion and entanglement with a compatible surface or primer can play a role, as can mechanical interlocking from surface roughness. The overall bond strength depends on both the adhesive and the substrate, as well as cure or setting conditions.

Important factors include the surface energy and cleanliness of the substrate, the presence of contaminants, moisture, temperature, and aging or weathering. The chemical composition and polarity of the plastic, its crystallinity, and its surface roughness also influence adhesion, as do the adhesive formulation and cure conditions.

Surface preparation and treatment are common ways to improve plastadhesion. Methods include cleaning, plasma or corona discharge treatment, flame treatment, and mechanical roughening. The use of adhesion promoters such as primers or silane coupling agents can enhance bonding to particular substrates. Selecting compatible adhesives (epoxies, polyurethanes, acrylics, cyanoacrylates) and optimizing curing cycles are also important.

Adhesion is typically assessed by mechanical tests such as peel tests, lap shear tests, and pull-off tests. Failure modes are described as adhesive (at the interface), cohesive (within the adhesive), or substrate (within the substrate). Some plastics, especially nonpolar polymers like polyethylene and polypropylene, resist adhesion and may require surface modification or primers. Plastadhesion is critical in packaging, automotive and electronics, coatings, and composite manufacturing.
