Planritningar, or floor plans, are two‑dimensional drawings that show the layout of a building as viewed from above, typically created by “cutting” through the building at a standard height above the floor. They illustrate the arrangement of rooms and spaces, including walls, doors, windows, stairs, and fixed installations. In many cases, furniture may be included to convey how a space could be used, but planritningar are primarily focused on the spatial organization rather than interior decoration.

Planritningar are used throughout the life cycle of a building. Architects use them during design, clients and contractors use them for construction and renovation work, and real estate professionals rely on them to communicate layout to buyers or tenants. They are also essential for planning applications and permitting procedures, where accurate representations of space and usage must be demonstrated to authorities.

Typical content and conventions include scale (for example 1:100 or 1:50), dimensions in millimeters, room names or numbers, total floor area, and orientation such as a north arrow. They may show built‑in elements like kitchens, bathrooms, and fixed fixtures, and can be provided for one floor or for all floors of a building. Modern planritningar are commonly produced with CAD or BIM software and exist both as digital files and as printed drawings. They differ from elevations and sections, which show vertical relationships and external facades, while planritningar focus on horizontal spatial organization.
