Pidginan is a constructed pidgin language created to illustrate how pidgins arise in contact situations. In academic and speculative contexts, it is described as a simplified, auxiliary means of communication among speakers of diverse language backgrounds in a multiethnic trade network. There are no native speakers in real life; in scholarly use it is treated as a prototypical pidgin rather than a creole.

As a typological model, pidginan emphasizes reduced morphology and flexible word order. It is designed to be contact-based, with social constraints concentrating on mutual intelligibility rather than cultural depth. In discussions, it serves as a baseline example alongside real-world pidgins.

Phonology is compact, with a small, non-tonal consonant system and a five-vowel inventory. Syllable structure generally allows simple patterns such as CV or CVC. Grammar is analytic: the basic sentence order is subject–verb–object; pronouns are present, while verbs lack inflection. Tense and aspect markers are particles or separate words.

The lexicon is drawn from a broad pool of languages typically associated with trade languages, with frequent loanwords and calque formations. Determiners are often optional; numerals and demonstratives precede nouns. Writing commonly uses a Latin-based alphabet, with an unstandardized orthography across texts.

Pidginan is used mainly as an instructional or fictional exemplar and in theoretical discussions about pidgin formation. It is not an established language and has no official speakers, but it provides a framework for examining how social contact drives vocabulary collection and grammatical simplification in pidgins.
