Phylloxerans are small sap-sucking insects in the family Phylloxeridae, within the order Hemiptera. They are related to aphids and are commonly referred to as phylloxerans. The family comprises many genera and species that feed on a variety of plants, often inducing noticeable growth abnormalities such as galls.

Biology and life cycle of phylloxerans are typically characterized by complexity and diversity. Many species exhibit alternating host or tissue life cycles, with winged and wingless generations. Reproduction can be parthenogenetic in some generations, while others produce eggs sexually. On their host plants, phylloxerans frequently induce gall formation on leaves, shoots, or roots, creating a protected habitat for developing immatures and concentrating plant sap as a food source.

Ecology and economic significance vary by species. The grape phylloxera, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae, is the best-known example, attacking grapevine roots and leaves and historically devastating European vineyards before the adoption of resistant rootstocks. Other phylloxerans feed on oaks, willows, elms, hazels and related plants, often causing leaf or root galls that can stunt growth or alter vigor, though not all species cause major economic damage.

Distribution and management are influenced by region and host range. Phylloxerans are found in many temperate zones, with many species native to North America and others introduced elsewhere. Management generally focuses on preventing spread, using resistant plant material, monitoring for gall formation, and employing cultural or regulatory measures. Chemical control is often limited by the phylloxerans’ life stages within galls or root tissue, making targeted strategies essential.
