Pflastern is the act of laying paving stones to create a hard, load-bearing surface such as a road, square, or sidewalk. The past tense form pflasterten indicates that the paving work was carried out in the past. The term is used in historical descriptions, civil engineering, and urban planning to denote the construction or restoration of stone-paved areas.

Note that Pflaster can refer to a paving stone (the unit) as well as to plaster in another sense; in the context of pavements, Pflaster denotes the stones and the paved surface. The verb pflastern derives from the German tradition of stone setting and masonry, and is commonly associated with manual workmanship by specialized crews in historic contexts.
