Perustuvet is an important species in the ecosystems of its native waters, serving as a food source for larger predators such as pike and trout. However, its populations have declined in recent decades due to factors such as habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore populations of this species, which is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.
