It relies on vivid mental imagery and associative linking to make items easier to recall. The technique is a form of peg-based mnemonics and is commonly taught in memory training.

A widely used peg list for numbers 1 through 10 is: one bun, two shoe, three tree, four door, five hive, six sticks, seven heaven, eight gate, nine line, ten hen. Variants exist, with some people adapting the peg words for language or personal preference. The key idea is to have a stable, easily visualized word that reliably corresponds to each number.

How it works: first, learn the peg words associated with each number. Then for a target list, create a memorable image that combines the item with its corresponding peg word. For example, to remember “apples, keys, and socks” on pegs 1, 2, and 3, you might visualize a bun holding apples, a shoe filled with keys, and a tree covered in socks. Some users place these images along a familiar route (a form of the method of loci) to aid retrieval. Retrieval proceeds by recalling the peg words in order and then the associated images.
