The typical pegboard is made from hardboard or fiberboard (commonly Masonite) with a regular pattern of holes. The standard configuration features 1/4-inch (about 6 mm) holes arranged on a 1-inch (25 mm) grid, which allows many compatible hooks and accessories to fit. Steel pegboard panels with similar hole spacing are also common, offering greater durability and higher weight capacity for industrial use.

Pegboard accessories include a variety of hooks, baskets, bins, and shelves designed to slot into the holes. Hook designs range from single-prong to multi-prong and specialty shapes, chosen based on the item to be hung and its weight. Panels can be mounted directly to walls or framed as freestanding units, and in retail settings pegboard is widely used for product display and merchandising.

Installation and maintenance considerations include securely mounting panels to studs or a solid backing, using appropriate fasteners for the panel material, and adhering to weight limits specified for the system. Regularly inspecting hooks and hardware helps prevent wear and accidental detachment.

Variations of pegboard systems exist, including different hole sizes and center spacings, as well as alternative perforated panels like perforated metal or slatboard. Pegboard’s primary advantages are its flexibility, ease of reconfiguration, and cost, making it a long-standing choice for organization and display.
