Pedávkování is the Czech term for the planning, construction, and maintenance of pedávek, which are linear ditches designed primarily for drainage of surface water from agricultural fields, lawns, or other broad flat surfaces. The practice involves excising a trench with a defined depth and width, often lining the trench with stone, concrete, or a geotextile barrier to prevent erosion and improve water flow. Water collected in a pedávka is directed to a lower-lying area such as a drain, pond, or stormwater system. Pedávkování is a practical application of hydrological management in temperate climates and has been used in the Czech Republic for centuries.

The origins of pedávkování can be traced back to the 18th and 19th centuries when agrarian reforms in Bohemia and Moravia promoted improved drainage to increase arable land. With the advent of the first public road building programs, pedávek were also used to channel runoff from roads and reduce erosion. The technique became codified in the early 20th century regulation of land and water use, setting standards for depth, slope, and drainage capacity.

Typical construction starts with surveying: a line is marked to determine the desired gradient, usually 0.2–1.0 %. After excavation, the bottom and sides are often reinforced with a layer of stone or a geotextile sheet. A cover—often a contour of gravel or small stones—is then placed to provide a self-supporting volume for water. Maintenance tasks include clearing vegetation, repairing erosion, and periodically checking flow rates.

Schemes of pedávkování vary. A "dry pedávka" collects water only during heavy rain, whereas a "wet pedávka" maintains continuous flow year-round. In residential landscapes, narrow border ditches (“obvodové pedávek”) serve both drainage and ornamental purposes. In larger agricultural settings, a system of parallel pedávek may be connected to a grid of larger drains.

Today, pedávkování remains common in Czech rural districts, especially in dry or semi-dry regions where surface water is a management concern. The concept has also been integrated into modern sustainable drainage system (SuDS) strategies, ensuring that pedávek function as part of a broader network of green infrastructure that protects water quality while providing ecological habitat.
