Outsoles are usually made from carbon fiber, nylon composites, or leather with a stiff flex rating to reduce energy loss. Closures include laces, Velcro, or micro-adjustable BOA dials, chosen for a snug, secure fit. Materials range from synthetic leather to microfiber uppers, balancing weight, breathability, and durability. Fit and sizing vary by brand, and footwear should be chosen to match pedal type and riding discipline.

Care involves keeping cleat screws tight, periodically replacing worn cleats, and cleaning the sole to maintain clipping or grip efficiency. Pedalshoes are a specialized investment for cyclists seeking improved power transfer, control, and efficiency, but may be less comfortable for walking or casual use.
