Pathtäckning is a Swedish term used in civil engineering to describe the process of applying a protective and load‑bearing surface to a path, trail, or other low‑ to medium‑volume transportation way. The concept covers both new surface installations and renewing existing ones, with the goal of providing a durable, safe, and weather-resistant riding, walking, or cycling surface. It is commonly applied to pedestrian and bicycle paths, farm lanes, service roads, and similar routes within urban or rural settings.

The typical workflow includes planning and design, assessment of the subgrade, and preparation of a stable base. Drainage is an important consideration to prevent water accumulation and frost damage. A surface layer is then selected from options such as asphalt concrete, Portland cement concrete, interlocking concrete pavers, chip seal, or compacted gravel, depending on expected loads, climate, maintenance capacity, and cost. The chosen layer is installed with appropriate compaction, curing, and finishing work, after which joints and transitions to adjacent surfaces are treated to maintain permeability and safety where relevant.

Materials and techniques vary by use case. Flexible pavements (asphalt or chip seal) are common for lighter traffic and easier maintenance, while rigid pavements (concrete) offer long service life in higher load conditions. Pavers provide good adaptability and aesthetics, especially in urban pedestrian zones. Gravel or crushed stone bases may be used for rural or low‑traffic paths, often needing more frequent maintenance.

Maintenance involves crack sealing, resurfacing or replacement of worn layers, edge maintenance, and ensuring proper drainage. Proper pathtäckning extends service life, reduces maintenance costs, and improves safety and accessibility.
