Parthenogenesis is a form of asexual reproduction in which an embryo develops from an unfertilized egg cell. This process occurs in various species, including some insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and even a few birds, but is not known to occur in mammals. In some cases, parthenogenesis is the primary or only mode of reproduction for a species. In others, it may occur sporadically or under specific environmental conditions.

The mechanisms of parthenogenesis vary. In obligate parthenogenesis, females reproduce exclusively through this method. In facultative parthenogenesis, females can switch between sexual reproduction and parthenogenesis, often triggered by factors like the absence of males or stress. The resulting offspring are typically female, as they inherit only the mother's chromosomes. However, in some species, the sex of the offspring can be determined by environmental factors or specific genetic mechanisms.

Parthenogenesis can be further classified into different types based on the genetic outcome. For instance, automictic parthenogenesis involves the fusion of two haploid products of meiosis, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical or very similar to the mother, but with some recombination. Apomictic parthenogenesis involves the production of offspring that are exact clones of the mother, with no genetic variation. This reproductive strategy offers advantages such as rapid population growth and the ability to reproduce in the absence of mates, but it can also limit genetic diversity, potentially making populations more vulnerable to environmental changes or diseases.
