Partenariats are cooperative arrangements in which two or more parties agree to work together toward common objectives, sharing resources, risks, and rewards. The term is used across business, government, civil society, and academia. In English, the term is "partnership," while "partenariat" and "partenariats" are French equivalents. A partnership is not automatically a separate legal entity; it is a framework of collaboration that may involve contracts, MOUs, or jointly created entities.

Common forms include business partnerships such as strategic alliances and joint ventures, public-private partnerships (PPPs), donor–recipient or NGO coalitions, and academic–industry collaborations. International development and cross-border projects often rely on partnerships to combine capital, technical expertise, and local knowledge. Each form varies in governance, risk distribution, and accountability.

Partnerships are usually formalized through agreements that specify aims, contributions, decision rights, profit sharing, timelines, IP and confidentiality provisions, and dispute-resolution mechanisms. Governance may involve joint steering committees, defined roles, performance indicators, and regular reviews. Exit clauses and contingency plans help manage dissolution or realignment.

Benefits include access to new markets, shared costs and risks, knowledge transfer, and increased legitimacy. Challenges commonly arise from misaligned incentives, cultural or organizational differences, power imbalances, regulatory constraints, and coordination complexity. Effective partnerships require clear objectives, trust-building, transparent reporting, and interim milestones.

Assessment of partnership performance relies on agreed metrics and data collection. Successful partnerships tend to have strong leadership commitment, aligning incentives, robust governance, and ongoing communication. When well designed, partnerships can accelerate innovation, scale impact, and extend resources beyond what any party could achieve alone.
