Parkolófék, also known as the parking brake or handbrake, is a mechanical braking system used to secure a vehicle when it is parked. Unlike the primary service brakes which are operated by a foot pedal, the parkolófék is typically engaged by a lever or button. Its primary function is to prevent the vehicle from rolling, especially on inclines.

The mechanism usually acts on the rear wheels, though some systems may engage all four. It operates independently of the hydraulic system used for the service brakes, meaning it can hold the vehicle even if the main braking system fails. This independent operation makes it a crucial safety feature.

Engaging the parkolófék involves mechanically locking the brake pads or shoes against the brake discs or drums. This lock is maintained by a cable or linkage system. Releasing the parkolófék disengages this mechanical lock, allowing the wheels to turn freely.

Modern vehicles often feature an electronic parking brake (EPB), which replaces the traditional lever with an electric actuator. This system can be engaged and disengaged via buttons and offers additional features like automatic engagement when the vehicle is switched off or hill-hold functionality. Despite technological advancements, the fundamental purpose of the parkolófék remains the same: to ensure the parked vehicle stays stationary.
