Parkeringsassistance, also known as parking assist or parking aid, refers to a range of electronic systems designed to help drivers maneuver their vehicles into parking spaces. These systems vary in complexity and functionality.

The most basic forms of parking assistance include simple parking sensors. These are typically ultrasonic sensors embedded in the vehicle's bumpers that emit sound waves. When these waves encounter an object, they bounce back, and the sensors measure the time it takes for the echo to return. This measurement is then translated into an audible warning signal, which increases in frequency as the vehicle gets closer to the object.

More advanced systems incorporate rearview cameras. These cameras display a live video feed of the area behind the vehicle on an in-car screen, often with superimposed dynamic guidelines that indicate the vehicle's projected path. Some systems also include surround-view cameras, which stitch together images from multiple cameras to provide a bird's-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings.

The most sophisticated parking assistance systems are fully automatic. These systems can identify suitable parking spaces and then take full control of steering, acceleration, and braking to execute the parking maneuver without driver intervention, beyond selecting the parking space and initiating the process. Driver input may still be required for gear selection.

The primary benefit of parking assistance systems is to reduce the stress and potential for damage associated with parking, especially in tight or complex situations. They can improve safety by alerting drivers to unseen obstacles.
