Palletten is the Dutch term for pallets, which are flat, rigid platforms used to support goods during storage and transport. Pallets enable efficient handling with forklifts and pallet jacks, facilitate stacking, and help protect products from damage during shipping. They are a fundamental component of modern logistics and supply chains.

Pallets vary by material and construction. Wooden pallets are the most common and come in stringer or block designs, typically made from softwood or hardwood. Plastic pallets offer moisture resistance and durability, while metal pallets provide high strength for heavy loads or specialized environments. Some pallets are designed for single-use, while others are designed for long-term reuse, repair, and cleaning. Pallets may be treated or coated to meet hygiene and safety requirements, and some designs are intended for specific handling equipment or automated systems.

Standard sizes and regional usage differ. In Europe, the EUR or EPAL pallet with dimensions 800 by 1200 millimeters is widely used and serves as a standard for interchangeability, efficiency, and compatibility with grip and forklift systems. In North America, pallets commonly measure 40 by 48 inches. Within ISO and national standards, pallets can be classified by size, entry (three-way or four-way for forklift access), and load-bearing capacity. International shipping may also require treatments such as ISPM 15 for wooden packaging.

Lifecycle and economics: Pallets are designed for reuse, repair, and recycling. Pallet pooling and rental programs help optimize utilization and reduce waste. The choice of material, maintenance, and regional regulation influence the environmental footprint and total cost of ownership.
