Paleogeografian refers to a researcher who specializes in paleogeography, the study of Earth's ancient geographic arrangements. The field aims to reconstruct past positions of continents and oceans, shorelines and seaways, and the climate and sea level conditions that prevailed at different times in geological history. A paleogeografian may work at universities, museums, geological surveys, or in the energy sector, translating ancient geography into interpretations of sedimentary records and fossil distributions.

To build paleogeographic reconstructions, practitioners integrate data from multiple sources: stratigraphy and lithology, fossil assemblages, paleomagnetism and radiometric dating, isotopic proxies, and sequence stratigraphy. Tectonic theory, particularly plate tectonics, underpins many reconstructions, which are often illustrated with time-sliced maps and digital models that show past continental configurations and circulation patterns.

Historically, paleogeography developed alongside geology and plate tectonics in the 19th through 20th centuries, with early work by geographers and geologists who mapped ancient geographies and fossil distributions. The modern practice emphasizes quantitative synthesis and computer-based plate reconstructions, such as those produced with software that animates continental drift and paleoclimate changes through time.

Applications of paleogeography include exploration for hydrocarbons, understanding past climate change and biogeography, and framing evolutionary and ecological questions about how organisms responded to shifting landmasses and oceans. The term paleogeografian is less common in standard English usage, with paleogeographer or paleogeographer being more typical.
