Palynology analyzes pollen and spores to infer vegetation; macrofossils provide direct clues about species presence; sedimentology reveals depositional settings and landscape processes; isotopic analyses of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen inform on temperature, precipitation, and water sources. Biomarkers, magnetostratigraphy, and radiometric dating help place environmental signals in time. Reconstructing paleoenvironments often requires multi-proxy syntheses and paleogeographic modeling to account for regional variation and shifting coastlines, continents, and climate modes.
