Pad printing is a reproduction process that uses a silicone rubber pad to transfer ink from an etched printing plate, or cliché, to a substrate with complex geometry. It is sometimes referred to as tampon printing and is widely used for printing on curved, irregular, or small items such as electronics, medical devices, automotive components, packaging, toys, and promotional products.

In operation, ink is applied to the etched plate and excess ink is removed with a doctor blade, leaving ink in the recessed areas. A flexible silicone pad then contacts the plate, picks up the image by capillary action, and moves to the target surface to transfer the ink. The pad’s elasticity lets it conform to non-flat surfaces and achieve multi-point contact for accurate image placement. After transfer, the pad retracts to its original shape, and the substrate is dried or cured depending on the ink type, which may be solvent-based, water-based, or UV-curable.

Equipment typically includes flatbed or rotary pad printers with a plate cylinder, pad holder, and a mechanism to control pad pressure, contact time, and retraction. Multi-color printing can be performed with multiple stations or a rotary arrangement. Common substrates include plastics, glass, metal, ceramics, and wood, while inks may be solvent-based, UV-curable, or water-based, and pads vary in durometer to suit application needs.

Advantages of pad printing include the ability to print on irregular and small parts, relatively low setup costs for short runs, and good adhesion to a range of materials. Limitations include lower resolution compared to some other printing methods, potential pad wear and ink adhesion issues, and registration challenges in multi-color runs. Environmental considerations involve solvent use and waste handling associated with certain inks.
