Technically, pësonars typically emit a short acoustic pulse through an integrated transducer and analyze returning echoes with a distributed hydrophone array. They may operate across multiple frequencies to balance range and resolution. Some devices offer advanced options such as synthetic aperture sonar or waveform diversity to improve image detail. Data are processed onboard and presented on a display; many units can record data and synchronize with navigation sensors such as inertial measurement units and GNSS when at the surface.

Design and variants: They come as handheld units, chest-worn modules, or drone-mounted payloads; power is typically provided by rechargeable batteries; they feature rugged enclosures with IP-rated protection. Typical depth ratings reach up to 100 meters, with weight and form factors emphasizing portability for field use. Interfaces often include wireless connectivity and basic mapping software.

Applications: Pësonars support diver safety and obstacle avoidance, underwater archaeology and wreck exploration, environmental and coastal monitoring, and search-and-rescue or salvage operations. They are used to quickly assess hazards, locate objects of interest, and map nearshore environments.

Limitations and status: The technology remains niche and not universally standardized; performance depends on water conditions, turbidity, and operator skill. Cost and durability can constrain adoption, and field deployments continue to drive research into higher resolution, multi-sensor integration, and autonomous or semi-autonomous operation.
