Access control practices are the systematic processes and guidelines that organizations use to restrict and manage who can view or interact with resources within an information system. The core goal is to protect confidentiality, integrity, and availability by ensuring only authorized individuals or entities obtain the appropriate level of access.

There are several foundational models that underpin access control policies. Discretionary access control grants owners of resources the flexibility to set permissions, while mandatory access control relies on centrally enforced labels or clearances to regulate access. Role‑based access control (RBAC) is widely adopted in enterprise environments, assigning permissions based on job roles to reduce complexity. Attribute‑based access control goes a step further, considering contextual attributes such as location, time, or device type.

Key security principles guide the design of effective access control. Least privilege restricts users to the minimal permissions required for their tasks; separation of duties splits responsibilities among personnel to prevent fraud; and the principle of least authority is applied to system processes. Authentication mechanisms—passwords, biometrics, tokens, or multi‑factor authentication—verify user identities before authorization decisions. Authorization then enforces the defined permissions. Auditing and logging record access events, enabling monitoring, forensic analysis, and compliance with regulations such as GDPR or ISO 27001.

Best practices include regularly reviewing and updating access rights, employing automated provisioning and deprovisioning workflows, and applying segregation of network and data access via network segmentation and encryption. Continuous monitoring, threat modeling, and security awareness training further strengthen the overall access control posture.
