Overflateaktiverere, commonly known as surfactants, are compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids, a gas and a liquid, or a liquid and a solid. This reduction in surface tension allows for better wetting, emulsification, foaming, and detergency. Surfactants achieve this by having a unique molecular structure that consists of a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a hydrophobic (water-repelling) tail. This amphipathic nature enables them to orient themselves at interfaces, with the hydrophilic head in the water phase and the hydrophobic tail in the non-polar phase (like oil or air).

There are four main classes of surfactants, categorized by the charge of their hydrophilic head group: anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric. Anionic surfactants have a negatively charged head and are excellent detergents and foaming agents, found in soaps and laundry detergents. Cationic surfactants possess a positively charged head and are often used as fabric softeners and disinfectants due to their ability to bind to negatively charged surfaces. Non-ionic surfactants have no charge on their head group, making them stable in a wide range of pH and electrolyte conditions, and are used in emulsifiers and wetting agents. Amphoteric surfactants can carry either a positive or negative charge depending on the pH of the solution, making them versatile and mild, often found in shampoos and body washes. Surfactants are crucial in numerous industries, including cleaning products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and agriculture.
