Outcrossers are individuals or lines that predominantly mate with unrelated individuals rather than with themselves or close relatives. The term is used in genetics, plant and animal breeding to describe strategies that maintain or increase genetic diversity and heterozygosity in a population.

In plants, outcrossing occurs when pollen from one plant fertilizes the ovules of a different plant. Many species are naturally outcrossing due to self-incompatibility systems, separate male and female flowers, or floral traits that attract pollinators. Outcrossing tends to produce offspring with higher genetic diversity and can reveal recessive beneficial alleles, contributing to vigor in some hybrids.

In agriculture and horticulture, outcrossing lines are used to introduce new alleles and to avoid inbreeding depression. Hybrid seed production relies on deliberate outcrossing between distinct parental lines. In self-pollinating crops, breeders may cross unrelated lines to generate diverse offspring and improve traits, while maintaining pure lines for other purposes.

In animal breeding and conservation, outcrossing is used to increase genetic diversity and reduce inbreeding, sometimes across populations or breeds. It can introduce valuable genetic variation but may also disrupt locally adapted gene complexes or introduce undesirable traits if not carefully managed.

Management and methods: growers use controlled pollination, isolation of plants, bagging of flowers, or intentional pollen transfer to ensure crosses between selected, unrelated individuals. The degree of outcrossing is often measured as an outcrossing rate, and breeding programs monitor inbreeding coefficients to balance diversity with the expression of desirable traits.
