Origin language refers to the hypothetical ancestral language from which a group of related languages is descended. In linguistic practice this is usually called a proto-language. An origin language is not directly attested by texts; its features are inferred from systematic correspondences among its descendants using the comparative method, along with internal reconstruction and corroborating evidence from borrowings and areal features.

Researchers reconstruct phonology, basic vocabulary, morphology, and syntactic patterns to infer sound correspondences, word roots, and grammar. Well-known examples include Proto-Indo-European as the origin language of many European and South Asian tongues, Proto-Afroasiatic, Proto-Dravidian, and Proto-Uralic. Reconstruction becomes increasingly uncertain as time depth grows, and results depend on the quality and breadth of available data.

Limitations include language contact, borrowing, rapid change, and the loss of early linguistic layers. Some proposed proto-languages are contested or considered hypothetical rather than universally accepted; different language families yield varying degrees of reconstruction reliability. Modern techniques, including Bayesian phylogenetic methods and computational approaches, supplement traditional methods but do not eliminate uncertainty. The concept of origin language remains central to historical linguistics as a practical representational tool for describing relationships among languages, while acknowledging its provisional nature and the complexities of language change over millennia.
