Oppkastdiaré is a colloquial term used in Norwegian to describe a condition characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of vomiting and diarrhea. This symptom complex is not a disease in itself but rather an indicator of an underlying illness or irritation affecting the gastrointestinal tract.

The causes of oppkastdiaré can be varied, ranging from common infections to more serious conditions. Viral gastroenteritis, often referred to as the "stomach flu," is a frequent culprit, with norovirus and rotavirus being common agents. Bacterial infections, such as those caused by Salmonella or E. coli, can also lead to these symptoms. Food poisoning, resulting from the consumption of contaminated food or beverages, is another significant cause. Other potential triggers include certain medications, food intolerances, inflammatory bowel diseases, and even stress in some individuals.

Symptoms typically include nausea, vomiting, watery or loose stools, abdominal cramps, and sometimes fever. Dehydration is a significant concern, especially in young children and the elderly, due to fluid loss from both vomiting and diarrhea.

Diagnosis usually involves a review of the patient's medical history and a physical examination. In some cases, stool samples may be collected for laboratory testing to identify specific pathogens. Treatment primarily focuses on managing symptoms and preventing dehydration. This includes encouraging fluid intake, such as water, clear broths, or oral rehydration solutions. Antiemetic and antidiarrheal medications may be prescribed in certain situations, but their use should be guided by a healthcare professional. Rest is also important for recovery. If symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by signs of significant dehydration, medical attention is recommended.
