Ophaling is a Dutch term that refers to the scheduled collection of items from households or businesses by a municipal or private waste-management service. The word is formed from op- (“up, to fetch”) and halen (“to fetch”), and is commonly used to describe the organized processes by which refuse, recyclables, and other waste streams are gathered for disposal or processing.

In everyday use, ophaling encompasses several distinct services. Huisvuilophaling refers to the regular collection of household waste, often on fixed days and along defined routes. Recyclables such as papier en karton (paper and cardboard), glas (glass), kunststof en metaal (plastics and metals), and GFT-ophaling (groente, fruit en tuinafval – organic waste) may be collected separately to improve recycling rates. There are also designated ophaling days for bulk waste (grofvuil) and for special items such as electronics or hazardous waste in some jurisdictions.

Operational methods vary by region. In many municipalities, households present containers or bags at the curb, and specially equipped vehicles empty the containers with automated arms. Some areas operate door-to-door pick-up, while others rely on drop-off points for certain streams. Frequency and container types are determined by local regulations, with fees often included in municipal taxes or paid separately by residents or businesses.

Ophaling plays a central role in municipal environmental policy, aiming to reduce litter, increase recycling, and manage waste streams efficiently. Challenges include contamination from non-target materials, route optimization, and ensuring high participation rates among residents.
