Omhändertagande is a Swedish legal term that translates to "taking into care" or "custody" and generally refers to the act of placing a person, particularly a child, into the care of another party, often the state. This can occur under various circumstances, primarily when an individual's well-being or safety is deemed to be at risk.

The most common context for omhändertagande is within child protection services. If a child is believed to be suffering from neglect, abuse, or is otherwise in a situation where their health or development is seriously endangered, a social worker or other authorized official can initiate proceedings for omhändertagande. This can be done either voluntarily by the parents or guardians, or through a court order if consent is not given or appropriate.

Omhändertagande can be temporary or permanent. Temporary omhändertagande, often referred to as LVU (Lag med särskilda bestämmelser om vård av unga), involves placing the child in foster care or a specialized institution while the family situation is assessed and addressed. The aim is usually to reunite the child with their parents once the underlying issues are resolved. Permanent omhändertagande, typically through adoption, is a more definitive measure when reunification is not considered in the best interest of the child.
