oikeusjärjestys

Oikeusjärjestys is a Finnish legal term that translates roughly as "legal order" or "legal system." It denotes the structured set of legal norms, institutions and procedures that regulate conduct within a given political community and that provide mechanisms for making, interpreting and enforcing law.

The concept covers sources of law such as the constitution, statutes, decrees, court decisions, customary law and general legal principles, together with administrative bodies and courts that apply and enforce those norms. In practice oikeusjärjestys also encompasses institutions for constitutional review, legislation, dispute resolution and sanctions that give legal norms practical effect.

Hierarchy and coherence are central features: a constitution or basic law occupies the highest position, followed by ordinary legislation and subordinate regulations.
