ohani

Ohani is a term that refers to a specific type of latter-day saint (LDS) temple in the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In an ohani temple, young marriages, referred to as "tender shoot" marriages, occur between teenagers and adults who are considered mature by the church, but not necessarily all worldwide church standards.

These marriages are considered mortal covenants, in which the couple is expected to become a symbol of the celestial marriage in the afterlife. Traditionally, the parties are between 14 to 18 years old for girls and 15 to 18 years old for boys, although the average age range for younger marriages as those in some parts of Africa have been reported to be higher. However, it is worth noting that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints disavowed this custom in the 1950s as a result of increased pressure from US lawmakers for strict adherence to state laws regarding marriage age, leading to restrictions on the Mormon practice of early or "tender shoot" marriages.

Prior to its discontinuation, this practice was predominantly observed in Utah, other Western areas of the United States, and among some isolated communities and members from other nations with similar traditional dowry values. Despite being relatively inconspicuous before later instances of attention and changing legislative landscapes that discouraged early marriage, the general practice was focal to differences in demographics, notably involving commonly interrelated minorities within communities.
