In offset lithography, an image is created on a metal plate with ink-receptive areas and non-image hydrophilic areas. The image areas are inked and, through an intermediate rubber blanket cylinder, transferred to the printing surface. This indirect transfer enables high-quality reproduction across large print runs and on a variety of substrates.

The printing press relies on a fountain solution to keep non-image areas ink-free, and precise ink balance to ensure consistent tones. After transfer to the blanket, ink is evenly applied to the substrate, which then dries. Modern offset presses use Computer-To-Plate (CTP) workflow, color management, and automation to control registration, ink density, and lead times. Variants include sheet-fed presses for books and magazines, and web-fed presses for mass newspapers and catalogs. Substrates range from standard coated and uncoated papers to cartonboards and plastics, with finishing options such as coating, laminating, and varnishing.

Common modes include coldset (ink dries at ambient temperature, used for newspapers) and heatset (ink dries with heat, used for magazines and catalogs with faster throughput).

Advantages of offsetpainossa include high image quality, cost efficiency at high volumes, broad substrate compatibility, and mature color control. Limitations include longer setup times, less economical for very small runs, and environmental considerations related to inks, fountain solutions, and solvents.
