Oceanmodeller is a term used to describe either a practitioner who builds and uses numerical models of ocean processes or software tools that perform such simulations. It is used in physical oceanography, climatology, coastal engineering, and maritime operations. Oceanmodellers build models to simulate circulation, temperature, salinity, tracer transport, and sea level under varying forcings.

Models solve fluid dynamics equations under common approximations, such as the Navier-Stokes equations with the Boussinesq and hydrostatic assumptions for large-scale flows. Vertical coordinates may be z-level, terrain-following (sigma), or hybrid. Typical domains range from global to regional to coastal scales. Grids can be structured or unstructured. Boundary conditions include open boundaries, river inflows, and oceanic forcing, such as wind stress, heat and freshwater fluxes, and tides. Initial conditions derive from climatology or previous runs; forcing data come from atmospheric reanalysis, satellite data, or in-situ sensors.

Output fields commonly include currents, temperature, salinity, and tracers, with applications in predicting upwelling, eddy dynamics, nutrient transport, and pollutant dispersion. Coupled configurations exist with sea-ice, wave, and atmospheric models. Assimilation techniques incorporate observations to improve forecasts and reanalysis.

Applications span storm surge modeling, coastal flood risk assessment, oil spill trajectory, search and rescue planning, and environmental impact studies. Limitations include computational demands, parameterization of subgrid processes, and uncertainties in forcings and initial conditions. Validation relies on hindcasts and comparisons with moored, glider, and satellite observations.

Common software frameworks include ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System), MITgcm, HYCOM, NEMO, and FVCOM, often used in both research and operational centers; some are open source while others are proprietary.
