The term is commonly used in Central and Eastern European languages, particularly in Hungarian, Polish, and Slovak, where it serves as the standard word for "observatory."

Observatories are equipped with specialized instruments such as telescopes, spectrographs, and cameras, which allow researchers to collect data on astronomical objects like stars, planets, galaxies, and nebulae. They may be located on the ground, aboard aircraft, or in space, depending on the type of observations required.
