Observatories, or observatooriumid in Estonian, are facilities designed for the systematic observation of celestial phenomena. They house telescopes and supporting instruments used to collect data on stars, planets, galaxies, comets, and other objects, as well as solar activity and sometimes climate-related measurements. Observatories can be ground based or space based, with space missions allowing observations beyond Earth's atmosphere.

A typical observatory comprises telescopes, protective domes or shelters, precise mounting systems, spectrographs or imagers, detectors, and data processing and control rooms. They are often located in areas with dark skies, low light pollution, and favorable weather, sometimes at high altitudes to improve viewing conditions. Operations involve long term monitoring, time sensitive observations, and the management and sharing of large data archives. Many observatories are run by universities, national agencies, research institutes, or international collaborations.

Observatories vary by wavelength and purpose. Optical and infrared facilities study visible light and heat emissions from celestial objects; radio observatories observe radio waves; solar observatories focus on the Sun; and X-ray and gamma-ray facilities probe high-energy processes. Notable examples include ground based sites such as Mauna Kea, Paranal, and La Silla, as well as space based observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Throughout history, observatories have evolved from simple towers to large multi telescope complexes and space missions, playing a central role in expanding our understanding of the universe.

In addition to research, many observatories engage in public outreach and education, and their data are shared through open archives for researchers worldwide.
