növényvédelm, also known as plant protection or crop protection, refers to the methods and practices used to control pests and diseases that affect plant health and agricultural productivity. The goal of növényvédelm is to maintain plant vigor, improve yield quality, and ensure food security while minimizing environmental impact.

A key component of növényvédelm is integrated pest management (IPM), which combines biological, cultural, mechanical, and chemical controls. Biological controls involve natural predators, parasites, or microbial agents that suppress pest populations. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, resistant varieties, and appropriate planting times reduce pest incidence. Mechanical methods include physical removal or barriers, while chemical controls involve the use of pesticides and fungicides.

Modern növényvédelm emphasizes sustainability. Advances in molecular biology enable the development of crops with inherent resistance to pests and diseases. Precision agriculture tools—such as satellite imaging, sensors, and drones—allow farmers to detect issues early and apply treatments precisely, reducing chemical usage. Regulatory frameworks often require safe handling, usage limits, and monitoring of pesticide residues to protect human health and ecosystems.

International cooperation, exemplified by organizations like the FAO and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), facilitates information exchange on pest threats and effective control strategies.
