Nyombélfekély, also known as duodenal ulcer, is a type of peptic ulcer that affects the lining of the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine.

The most common cause of nyombélfekély is infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This bacterium can damage the protective mucous layer that lines the stomach and duodenum, making it more susceptible to acid damage. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, are another significant cause. Long-term use of these medications can interfere with the body's ability to protect the duodenal lining from stomach acid.

Symptoms of nyombélfekély can vary, but the most common is a burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen, often occurring between meals or at night. The pain may be temporarily relieved by eating food or taking antacids. Other symptoms can include bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. In some cases, complications can arise, such as bleeding (leading to black, tarry stools or vomiting blood) or perforation (a hole in the duodenal wall), which are medical emergencies.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as an upper endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or a barium swallow. Treatment aims to reduce stomach acid and eliminate H. pylori if present. This often involves a combination of medications, including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers to reduce acid production, and antibiotics to eradicate H. pylori. Lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding NSAIDs and reducing stress, may also be recommended.
