nyomatékú

Nyomatékú is an adjective used in Hungarian technical language to describe something that involves, produces, or is characterized by torque (nyomaték). The word is formed from nyomaték and the suffix -ú, which indicates possession of a certain property. In practice, nyomatékú is a descriptive modifier applied to devices, mechanisms, or physical quantities where rotational effects due to torque are central.

In physics and mechanical engineering, nyomaték refers to the moment of force that causes or tends to cause rotation about an axis. The magnitude is often written as τ = r × F, with τ measured in newton-meters and the direction determined by the right-hand rule. A nyomatékú rendszer or nyomatékú elem describes a component or system on which torque acts or is transmitted. Common examples include nyomatékú motorok (torque-producing motors) and nyomatékú hajtások (torque-transmitting drives). In such contexts, engineers emphasize the torque characteristics as a primary specification, such as peak or continuous output torque and torque at operating speed.

Usage of nyomatékú is largely attributive, describing a property of a device, mechanism, or model rather than naming a separate physical quantity. It is related to, but distinct from, terms like nyomatékos, which in Hungarian means emphatic or forceful in a non-technical sense. In technical Hungarian, nyomatékú is used to signal that rotational effects are a defining feature of the subject under discussion.
