Numerosity is the perceptual magnitude of a set of discrete items, representing the quantity of a collection without the need to count each item. It describes the ability to judge how many objects are present, and is distinct from counting, exact arithmetic, or symbolic number knowledge. Numerosity perception underlies rapid judgments about resources, danger, and social information in humans and many animals.

In humans, two systems are commonly described. Subitizing yields exact judgments for small sets (about 1–4 items) through fast, parallel processing. For larger sets, the approximate number system (ANS) encodes numerosity approximately, with precision following Weber’s law: discriminating quantities depends on the ratio between them rather than their absolute difference.

Neural correlates involve parietal cortex, especially the intraparietal sulcus, where neurons show tuning to specific numerosities. Neuroimaging and single-unit studies reveal approximate, quantity-specific representations that can adapt with exposure. Behaviorally, judgments can be biased by non-numerical cues such as total area, density, or arrangement, so experiments often control for these factors. Numerosity adaptation experiments reveal aftereffects that recalibrate perceived quantity after exposure to a given numerosity.

Developmental and comparative work shows that infants and many animals can distinguish different numerosities, with performance improving with experience. Difficulties in numerical cognition, including dyscalculia, are linked to atypical numerosity processing or ANS acuity. Numerosity research informs education, perception theory, and the broader relationship between perceptual systems and higher mathematics.
