Nonlifting is a term used in various fields to describe the avoidance or prohibition of lifting actions. It does not have a single, formal definition and is used differently depending on the domain. In practice, nonlifting typically emphasizes reducing manual handling of loads and reliance on mechanical means.

In occupational safety and ergonomics, nonlifting refers to designing tasks so that workers do not have to lift heavy items. This can involve mechanical aids, automatic handling equipment, improved layout, and work practices such as team lifting or frequent rest breaks. The goal is to reduce the risk of back injuries, strains, and other musculoskeletal disorders.

In industry and logistics, nonlifting workflows may use conveyors, cranes, hoists, pallet jacks, and automated storage and retrieval systems. Implementation often follows risk assessment, such as job hazard analysis, to determine when manual lifting is avoidable and to identify appropriate controls.

In other uses, the term may appear in discussions about content reuse or copyright, where “lifting” can refer to copying or reprinting material; in such contexts, nonlifting would imply avoiding copied content. This usage is informal and not standardized.
