Non-Champagne is a descriptive term for sparkling wines that are produced outside the Champagne region of France and therefore cannot be labeled as Champagne. The term is not a formal designation, but a practical way to distinguish these wines from true Champagne.

Legal protections and naming practices vary by jurisdiction. In the European Union and many other markets, Champagne is a protected designation of origin. Sparkling wines from other regions are named after their region (such as Crémant, Prosecco, Cava, Franciacorta) or simply as sparkling wine. Notable examples include Crémant from various French regions, Prosecco from Italy, and Cava from Spain. In some countries, including the United States, wine labeled as Champagne may only come from the French Champagne region, while other sparkling wines use their regional names or the generic term.

Production methods differ among non-Champagne sparkling wines. The traditional method (méthode traditionnelle) is used by Crémant and Franciacorta, producing secondary fermentation in the bottle. The tank method (Charmat) is common for Prosecco and several other wines, producing the same style of bubbles but with a different process. Both methods can yield a range of sweetness levels and acidity.

Grape varieties also vary by region. Champagne relies on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, but non-Champagne sparkling wines often use different varieties such as Glera in Prosecco, Macabeo/Xarel-lo/Parellada in Cava, or Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Nero in Franciacorta. The term non-Champagne thus covers a wide array of styles with diverse grapes, methods, and regional traditions.
