Nivelsidevammojen refers to injuries of the ligaments that stabilize joints. Ligaments are tough bands of connective tissue that connect bone to bone and help control joint movement. These injuries range from mild sprains, where the ligament is stretched, to complete tears. They can occur from sports, falls, or direct blows, and often involve joints such as the knee, ankle, wrist, or shoulder.

Common sites include the knee, where injuries to the ACL and MCL are well known; the ankle, particularly the lateral ligaments around the ankle joint; and the wrist, such as the scapholunate ligament. Symptoms depend on severity but typically include joint pain, swelling, tenderness along the affected ligament, reduced range of motion, and a sense of instability or the joint “giving way.”

Diagnosis relies on history and physical examination and is supported by imaging. X-rays are used to rule out fractures, while MRI provides detailed information about ligament integrity and associated injuries. The treatment approach varies with severity. The initial management often follows the RICE principles (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Immobilization with a brace or cast may be used for certain grades, followed by structured rehabilitation and physical therapy to restore strength and function. Complete tears or unstable joints may require surgical repair or reconstruction, especially in athletes or in joints where stability is crucial.

Prognosis varies by injury severity and timing of treatment. Most mild injuries heal within weeks, while severe tears may take months and risk persistent instability. Preventive measures include conditioning, neuromuscular training, proper technique, and appropriate protective equipment.
